Ive been living in France for about 3 years now and I totally agree that there seems to be a lot less guilt around eating but I’ve met French people who will just stop eating one day of the week when they feel like they’ve put on some weight. There seems to be a lot more self control

I don’t think I could ever not obsess about food. I love food and I always will. I grew up in a family where food brought us together, we would plan our days around food, and trying new foods and making beautiful meals is something I find immense joy in. Right now I’m going through my journey of losing a little bit of weight. I’m happy with how I look but would like be a bit thinner. One thing that is helping me is balancing my glucose levels (The Glucose Goddess) !! And being more mindful of the time period I eat in. I would love to be an intuitive eater, but it’s definitely not something that comes naturally to me.

Can you please share how these ideas apply to active weight loss? While I feel I have adopted many of these into my life, I am still over weight - and weight loss doesn't seem to happen if I am simply eating intuitively and listening to hunger and fullness cues. I have only ever lost weight when allowing myself to go hungry....

I’m in the UK and recently saw a chef programme where he was in Provence. He went to a primary school where the children were given a totally balanced 3 course lunch, based around organic vegetables and fruit, which is monitored by a dietitian. They are encouraged to appreciate the culture of French cuisine and eat with their peers. Water is the only drink offered. My English grandchildren are given chicken nuggets or fish fingers at school, for the same price. Unfortunately, the UK has tended to follow the American model, the result being we are a very sick nation.😢

"Food balance mindset" I think is one of the main things... being mindful when we eat; we enjoy the food we eat fully, we derive pleasure from it, but we're able to get over it quickly. For example yesterday we made home-baked cookies (chocolate cookie recipe from "handletheheat", AMAZING!). We refrigerated the batter, so we have been able to enjoy a few cookies each yesterday AND today. We all agreed the cookies were absolutely delicious, best cookies we have ever had (gooey and doughy on the inside with caramelised golden brown crispy edges and melted dark chocolate chunks). It was overall an amazing experience, we thought a lot about them while eating them, in the sense of enjoying them, but after that we just forget about the cookies and move on to then enjoy our hobbies, the sunny weather, interesting conversations, or simply other healthy, nutritious and also delicious meals. We don't think about cookies again until we decide to bake them again, and probably that won't happen for weeks or even months. We get busy living, and that's what makes those foods so enjoyable: they don't happen often so we are grateful for them. If you eat something every day or every time you even think about it once, then it becomes routine and you can't really appreciate the experience.

Biggest difference is they don't add seed oils to the bread in France (or at least they didn't). Same for pastries. The lie about saturated fat (esp stearic acid) led to the switch to toxic seed oils & PUFA. Now everyone is fat and sick. Avoid PUFA, increase saturated fat and you'll begin to recomp your body as you lose fat.

All of the studies about the way fat shaming impacts actual fat gain, apart from the mental health issues I was already aware of from personal experience, are really insightful. Thank you so much for sharing and summarizing the topic in a bigger picture. I was searching for some mental health video about fat shaming, but coming from a nutritionist I would say if feels even more validating of the pain that body shaming inflicts, sending a huge hug for that. The only thing that I don't agree on is addressing the topic as a medical concern, once because the medical concern might often be a mask that still is meant (and consequently felt) as a sneaky way of shaming (my narcissistic mother uses this tactics, after years of body shaming she has switched to arbitrarly misdiagnose me - at every conversation, no matter the topic - with type 2 diabetes, and I have to point out that she's no doctor, apart from a slow metabolism I was born with I show no signs, and she did the same with my father so she could control what he eats, even years after divorce. Ironically, she's the one with type 2 diabetes); and second, because even medical concern can lead people to engage in similar behavior. When people tell me that I should stop smoking because I risk cancer, I crave a cigarette. When somebody who has cleanmess obsessions is told that washing themselves too frequently makes their hair get oily earlier, they become hyper-aware of the current oiliness. I got to the point in which I cinically answer "just let me die, then".

I often feel like people just don't naturally think about their eating habits. Knowing about nutrition and how to use that info is super important, especially now with all these artificial and unhealthy foods. In this fast-paced life, processed foods have really messed up our ability to eat healthy and organic, which has led to a global health crisis. People unknowingly eat way more calories than they need, ending up obese. Nature gives us foods high in nutrition and low in calories, but we humans go and make stuff that's packed with calories and... you know what. What's your take on that?

But I hate eating all of the unhealthy food that they force me to eat, and otherewise if they didn't make bad decisions I would be naturally skinny. What do I do when it's almost impossible for my parents to give me healthy food or let me eat it.

I usually overeat because im so irrationally afraid that there won't be enough food later and it will be unbearably painful. so I'll eat a lot in one sitting to try to "get the food of the day" over with and reap no joy or satisfaction from it. yeesh. definitely something leftover from having a horrible ED mindset., when there really WOULDNT be enough food later... now the idea of hunger is so overwhelming and scary to me, I just never want to feel it. it feels like I'll never let go of this mindset but I'm very, very slowly experimenting with feeling hunger again and feeling satisfaction versus "stuffed" again. setting small timers or making tiny goals to try to increase my tolerance really gently. it doesn't feel great right now. and a lot of the emotional numbness that overeating helped me maintain is starting to crack. woof. im really struggling.

I live in the US and work for a French small business, my boss is French. When I eat on my breaks at work, which I have twice - around 9 am and then around 2 pm, which I do get hungry for and I think these are normal times for breakfast and lunch - she often says: « You know you don’t have to eat, right?? » « So you don’t need to eat in the evening because you already eat twice during the day, you ate two meals!! » I used to have an eating disorder and now eating intuitively but these comments can definitely affect me negatively.

I would say that diet culture is much more prevalent in the US than Europe. The French I have always found have one of the most common sense approaches to food. Interestingly also, as someone who grew up in Austria and Germany and arrived in the US at age 18, I have never seen obesity to the extent that I have seen it in America. Single most glaring differences to me between Europe and the US is that in the US all foods are categorised by protein carbs and fats / all is full of artificial ingredients and some of the diets coming out of the US are just ludicrous - latest craze seemingly be the Carnivore diet During the times I lived there we had all from the Zone to Southbeach to Atkins etc I remember in the low fat craze also buying mountains of ‘Snackwell lights’, thinking it was much better cause less fat… Also, portion sizes in the US are just out of control; not to mention the ‘all you can eat’ buffets and places The whole concept in France and broader Europe of just stopping when you are full, eating slowly, enjoying food w family etc is also to many a foreign concept Working in NY, we have all perfected the quick sandwich or bite at your desk at lunch followed then by massive dinners at night. I can’t remember a time when in the US, I actually sat down to eat lunch properly… So I think diet culture as a whole in the US is much more developed, the attitude of Americans towards food is a bit off in my humble opinion and as a result, we have obesity in the US that is not as prevalent in France and other European countries Approach in France just more normal and common sensical, from proper meals and meal sizes to low intensity exercise to a plain and simply joie de vivre that the US (and I love it and it will always be my second home) could learn a thing or two from.
